Sneaking and Candy Eating Gnome Children Are Surprised On Christmas Eve

Once there was a little gnome family. When I say little I mean as in their individual sizes were little, being no taller than 6 inches. The number of members, however, was not little. When you included mother and father the grand total was 11 gnomes!

The mother and the father of the house loved each other very much. The children felt this love move to encompass them also, and though there where fights, messes, and plenty of noise, this little gnome family was a happy one.

It was a happy cozy home in the bottom of a pine tree. It was 5 stories high so there could be enough bedrooms to hold all the children. There was also a large library, kitchen, dinning room, work room, and play room.

It was Christmas Eve. Mother and father were wrapping the last of the Christmas presents while all their children were in bed. Well, at least the children were supposed to be.

Out of Bed

Three of the most curious of the children were peeking their heads out. The heads appeared to be floating, for no body could be seen. The coast was clear, so we now can see they have bodies to go with those sweet heads!

The eldest of the three was Fred, he was the dignified age of 7. The next in line was Lissy being the perfect age of 6, with the youngest being 5, which was not so good as being 6 or 7, but we must all have trials in life mustn’t we? This poor child’s name was Lily.

The sisters felt the excitement all children feel while out of bed on Christmas Eve, and this excitement found its way out of their bodies through giggles!

“Hushed,” whispered Fred. “Do you want to be sent back to bed?”

Of course no one wanted that horrible tragedy to occur. The giggles stopped and the little mischievous group tip-toed into the kitchen.

“Let’s open the pantry,” whispered Lissy. “Mother won’t miss it if we take just a few pieces of candy right?”

“Oh candy. I want some candy!”

Lily was quickly shushed by Lissy and Fred. They waited to be sure their parents didn’t hear, then they continued their mischievousness.

“Take only one of each candy,” ordered Fred. “If we take more, mother is sure to notice.”

Thinking on how wise her older brother was, Lily said, “Alright, but me first please!”

“No I want to be first,” declared Lissy.

Despite the rough start, the three managed to all get one piece of each of the handmade candy without being noticed by their parents.

Candy creates thirsty throats, but Fred handled the situation well by giving everyone some milk. Not only that, but the milk didn’t even spill!

Watching Mother And Father

“Let’s peek in on mother and father,” whispered Fred.

This, of course, was agreed upon by all.

On the tips of their toes with breaths held, the three mischief makers opened the library door and peeked in.

Sadly, they did not have a clear view of the gift wrapping. Their beautiful Christmas tree, which they had loved so much was now their obstacle to seeing what surprises were in store for them

“Drat,” said Lissy. Fred frowned but Lily took the matter into her own hands.

She crept into the library and quickly dove behind the couch.

Breaths held, they waited….phew, they remained undetected!

Soon Fred and Lissy followed the younger sister’s example. Now all three were behind the couch, peering out. And oh, the wonderful things they saw!

Mother wrapped a yarn doll, who had all kinds of clothing.

Then father wrapped a wooden toy soldier he had whittled himself.

“Oh boy, I hope that’s for me,” whispered Fred.

“I know that doll is for me!” whispered Lily.

Lissy already had one so she was free to hope for her sister as well. What she wanted was an embroidery set.

The gnome children watched as books were wrapped, along with knitting needles, crayons, crystals, mittens, Christmas-colored pajamas for everyone, an embroidery kit, and much more. Lissy had a special eye on that embroidery kit.

It was getting very late for the 3 mischievous gnome children. The fire in the fireplace was warm and comforting. The day had been filled with all kind of busyness that left the whole family exhausted. Even the excitement of Christmas couldn’t keep these children awake forever.

Behind the couch the three slept, and slept, and slept.

Oh No!

Fred was awakened suddenly by mother exclaiming, “Oh no, all of the stockings have holes in them! The moths must have done this! I can’t possibly fix them all tonight even with your help! They need to be filled with goodies too. Oh dear, I’m afraid I am too exhausted to continue.”

“Don’t worry my dear, ” said father, “It’s late and you are so tired. Come to bed. You can wake early and fix it them. If the baby wakes I will take care of him so you can sleep”

Mother hugged her husband with gratitude and gladly went to bed. Father followed, then all was quiet.

“Oh NO,” thought Fred. “Mom needs help! Wake up Lily. Wake up Lissy! We must help mother!”

Lissy yarned and without being fully awake asked, “What’s going on?”

Fred explained. It took some time to wake them up enough to understand.

At last the sisters did understand.

“We must help mother!” declared Lily.

All agreed and got right to work.

The first thing was to start fixing the stockings! Fred and Lissy went to fetch their sewing bags and Lily went to go bring the candy.

Though mother had taught them both how to mend stockings, they quickly realized they needed help.

“The only thing we can do is wake them all up. Except for the baby, Sue and Billy, they are too little to help.”

Off the three, no longer mischievous, gnome children went to wake up their siblings. It was not an easy task, but they managed it anyway.

Wake Up!

Everyone got out their sewing bags and started to mend their Christmas stockings.

Lily was the youngest one present and the only one who didn’t know how to mend. Oh dear, the hardships of being 5! She did manage to feel better when she could help to sort and fill the stockings with all the homemade candy and goodies. Perhaps being 5 wasn’t such a hardship after all?

It was quite the sight with all of them working together so late that Christmas Eve was past and Christmas day began. But it was to help mother and father and so all felt happy to help.

At last the deed was done and all went to bed.

Christmas Surprise

Perhaps for the first time in the history of Christmas mornings, the children slept in. The magic of Christmas morning was still able to wake the children before their parents, however. Down the stairs and into the library they went. Seeing the library reminded them of what good they had done, which made them more merry than usual.

Mother woke up and realized she had not woken up early! The stockings were left un-mended. There was no candy in any of them! She quickly handed the baby to father and ran down the stairs and into the library.

What did mother see? She saw all the stockings mended and bursting with goodies. She saw her children all around the Christmas tree with huge grins on their faces looking up at her.

Without planning, everyone said together, “Merry Christmas Mother!”

“But how…when…how did you know….”

Annie, who was the eldest at the age of 15 said, “Fred, Lissy, and Lily woke us up and told us you needed help.”

Father came in with the baby and exclaimed, “How did this happen?”

Annie explained to father.

“Children, thank you so much!” said mother.

“Yes children, you were a great help to your mother. Thank you.” said father.

“There’s one thing I don’t understand,” said mother, “Fred Lissy, Lily, how did you know the stockings needed mending and filling?”

The three mischief gnome children looked guilty and confessed to everything.

Mother was not mad, the three children gave mother one piece of each kind of their candy, which relieved them of their wrongdoings.

How It Ends

I am happy to say, that Fred opened the wooden soldier doll, Lily opened the yarn doll, Lissy opened an embroidery kit, and the whole family loved each other a little more this beautiful Christmas morning.

The end
