Chapter 9

Starting The Next Embroidery Sampler

Between Willow, Charlotte, and William the chatter never seemed to take a break! Willow, Charlotte and William’s best friend, was their embroidery teacher who had been gone when they found their great grandmothers fairy tale and newly found ballet patterns. embroidery patterns The siblings showed every last one of them to Willow who was as delighted as she was short.

Now please do not make fun of Willow for being so short, she is after all a wood nymph who would be no taller then your palm. Isn’t she adorable?

Willow’s twinkling laughter fill the hair at all the wonderful embroidery patterns great grandmother Pricilla had drawn.

“Why this is a treasure trove! This Rapunzel would look great using the twisted chain stitch for her hair, and the satin stitch would be perfect for making Jack’s clothing warm. It must get cold way up in the clouds.”

Williams ears perked up when he heard names of stitches he had never heard of before.

“Twisted stitch and satin stitches? What do they look like?”

Willows round little face lit up with a huge grin.

“Would you like to find out?”

William and Charlotte looked eagerly at each other and then at Willow.

“Yes yes yes!” exclaimed Charlotte.

Suddenly acting nonchalant William said, “If you want to.”, which did not fool any one!

The Game Is Afoot, Or The Lesson Begins

“Well then, let’s get started!” Willow was just as excited as her human friends. “Thankfully I brought my pencil, paper and ruler with me today.” She sat cross legged and thought for a minute with her pencil balanced on her head, which was very adorable.

“I know!” She tilted her head forward, the pencil rolled off her hat, and she caught it triumphantly! She began to draw, then erased, and drew some more. William and Charlotte tried to peak, but Willow looked up, winked, and shook her head.

At last she said, “There! This ought to do the job nicely!” Willow showed her friends the tiny drawing. It was a drawing of two trees on either side, branches coming down from the top, flowers here and there, and in the middle a large rock with a sword sticking out of it.

“Hey! It’s the sword in the stone! I love that story!”

Dear readers you may read the story here and download the embroidery sampler here

“You don’t say teased his sister good naturedly, “You only mention it everyday! I must have heard you say at least 100,000,000 times how much you love that story. Then if you add Robin Hood, you add another 500,000,000 to your daily mentions, and I wonder how you have time to think of anything else!”

William glared, with just a little seriousness behind it, at Charlotte and was about to protest when Willow said laughing;

“It’s so true!”

Willow had a gift for making folks happy, even if they may wish to stay grumpy, and it worked well on William.

A Quick Break For Teasing

“But you must admit they are wonderful stories right?” he said.

It was admitted which left them free to start their Sword In The Stone embroidery pattern.

Once it was transferred Willow was ready to teach the chain stitch.

“You see this line border? This is where we will chain stitch! First you must pick the color you want, thread, and knot it.” When all were ready Willow continued.

“Now we must come up from underneath.”

Next we go back down right next to where you came up, but don’t pull all the way through!

Yep that’s right! Jump a head just a little bit, up you go. Now pull through!

That’s all there is to it!

“I put my needle through the same first hole instead of right next to it, is that ok?” asked Charlotte.

“Absolutely!” was the reply.

That Wasn’t So Hard

“Try to keep the stitches as even as you can. But as with you first embroidery sampler, it does not need to be perfect!”

“Hey, I think this is my favorite stitch do far!” declared William.

“I enjoy sewing all the stitches, but I think my favorite is still the blanket stitch.” said Charlotte.

“Your welcome to be wrong.” teased William. Both girls laughed and gave him a good natured shove. William could barely feel Willow’s shove, but decided it would be best to not say anything about it.

“Turning the corner is just a little tricky. Watch me.” said Willow. So they did. “Now you try it.”

The siblings were successful!

The friends chatted away happily while they sewed. And was always the case, the time flew by and were suddenly looking at their finished chain stitch border.

Willow looked at their work and beamed with pride. “Well done both of you”, Willow was thanked, which made her heart glow.

“Well I suppose we should go.” said William reluctantly.

“Would you like to come with us to see our Rumpelstiltskin pattern?!” asked Charlotte. ” I think it is high time we introduced you to our family!”

William remembered Charlotte introducing him to Willow for the first time and how shocking it was.

“I think,” said he, “That I will do something to prepare them for the shock first.”

“How?” asked Charlotte.

“I don’t know, let’s talk about it on the way home.” Charlotte carried Willow, and the three discussed the problem as they walked.

The End, For Now

Random Fun Fact About Chain Stitches

Dear readers, I must confess something. I am a big nerd! Not the gaming type of nerd, but the crafting type.

I love all things crafting and I love history. So when I found Bernadette Banner’s YouTube channel I was in heaven!

Just a week or so before writing this, I watched one of her videos where she tests an antique sewing machine, one that didn’t use a bobbin. Instead, the underside was a chain stitch! Again my crafty nerdiness came flying out of me and I squealed with excitement! Ok maybe I didn’t squeal, but I was excited and if you and or your child is curious, you may watch the video here.

Come Back Next Week For…

Be sure to come back next week to find out how Charlotte and Williams introduction goes. How do you think you would react in meeting a wood nymph?
