Tips For Sewing With Kids

I have a few tips to help you have as smooth a crafting time with your kids as possible.

  1. If your family is new to sewing, and you are as well, then it is a good idea to tell the kids you are getting them set up, one at a time. I start with my oldest in hopes that they understand what we are doing sooner then the younger ones would so they can help if needed.
  2. Children about 4 and under can be playing with play dough or in bed while the magic happens. Alternatively you could have them sew with a sewing card.
  3. Use the whip stitch if the blanket stitch seems to tricky for your beginner sewers.
  4. Mark with a black marker where the line to follow is for ages 7 and younger.

Materials List For The Felt Sweater Pattern

Felt Ornament Pattern With Kids Easy Tutorial

Ready for your felt ornament pattern w/ kids tutorial? Let’s begin!

  1. Begin by downloading my free Christmas sweater template here.
  2. Cut it out and pin it to the felt color of your choice. I obviously chose red, because that is the color of Christmas sweaters. Don’t ask me how I know this, I just do, ever since I was a little! Oh the silly ideas we get into our heads! I’m not the only one right? Now plug in your glue gun.
  3. Fold the felt in half. Knot your thread and thread your needle. Begin at the right sleeve. Pull your needle inbetween the felt, for young ones, don’t be too picky about this.
  4. Now loop around to the back, put your needle through and pull back to the front. This is the first stitch.
  5. Next move a little way to the left and poke your needle out the back. Grab your embroidery floss, wrap around your needle from right to left as if your poor needle is cold and needs a shawl.
  6. Pull all the way through to the back. Now you begin again.
  7. Frog leap over to push the needle from the front to poke out the back again, wrap your poor cold needle around from left to right, and pull through.
  8. Repeat until you have made it all the way around. You can make it simpler and just sew around the bottom of the sleeve, and both sides if this works better for your children.
  9. stuff the body with fluff or scrap felt. I used scrape felt. until the desired tummy sized is achieved!

To Finish

Glue on what ever decorations your children wish to with the glue gun making sure you are careful with whom you let use this wonderful, but pain inducing craft tool. Glue on the loop. Hang on your tree and admire your handiwork and those of the other family sewer!

It’s a sweet memory you just had with your children.
