What Is The Best Yarn For Finger Knitting For Kids?
With this question we will need to go into deep ancient theory of textiles, where we explore ancient ruins of all cavillations …..
Just Kidding!
I can sum up the answer to this question in just two words, thick yarn.
That’s it? Practically. Really, you can finger knit with any kid of yarn but for beginners, especially kid beginners, thick is best because your child will see progress quickly. It’s always nice to have those quick easy wins when you are first learning something new, don’t you think?
There is only one exception, fuzzy yarn. Although the the fuzz is fun and soft, it can be hard to deal with your first go around. It catches on rings, finger nails, and even tiny amounts of dead skin on your finger. Also, it blurs the vision somewhat. So let’s stay away from fuzzy yarn okay? Just for now. Okay!
Also, you can finger knit with other materials. We will be exploring two others today, ribbon and lace. Ribbon and lace is fun and easy to and makes a different Christmas decorating style possible in your home. (Such as farm house, cottage, etc.)
Let’s get started!

Today I am teaching you a how to do finger knitting using thicker red yarn, but you can use whatever color will fit your family’s Christmas décor style.
First of all, garlands have many uses including hanging on the mantel, across a window sill, around mini Christmas trees, around candles, and of course around the Christmas tree!

Story is the best way for us mortals to learn and remember a new skill! Also, it’s fun. I used this same super simple story to teach my 5 oldest kids and it will help you teach yours.
Step 1 Beginning knot
Until my children get the hang of it, I tie the beginning finger knitting knot for them.
First, I make a circle with the yarn. After that, I bring the yarn to the back so that it passes through the middle back. Third, grab it and pull all the way through.
Step 2 Easy DIY For Kids Finger knitting Story
So first we must learn the hand positions.
Placement of the hands is important to making learning how to finger knitting easy. With the right hand hold the knot between the thumb and the index finger. Use the rest of the hand to hold the short side.
You can use either hand, I use the left hand below. The loop is the pond. There is a fish in there and we are going to catch it!
Story
“Once, you were walking along enjoying the fresh air when you saw a pond, and when you looked in, you became excited when you saw a fish!
With your thumb and your index finger, you dived into the pond and caught the fish and pulled it all the way out!
Suddenly you noticed the pond got bigger! And when it gets too big, then we take the long tail, the tail that is attached to the rest of the yarn, and pull on it. Magically it is smaller and we are ready to go diving to catch more fish!”
Step 3 How To End Finger Knitting
Suddenly, you heard a cutting noise. You reached in to catch another fish, but this time, the pond disappeared as you pulled the fish out! But you are not to worry for any time you want to catch more fish, the pond will be back!”
The End
So that is all there is to it for this easy DIY finger knitting with kids Christmas garland tutorial. Feel free to say the story in your own words!
