Family Crafting Traditions

Do you remember bringing down the Christmas tree ornament box from the attic, garage, or closet? Does it bring the warm fuzzies to your heart? It does to mine. It’s like I just drank a glass of hot chocolate, with fuzzy socks and a fuzzy blanket on.

This may sound silly to you, and perhaps it is, but it is the best way I can figure to describe it!

I remember opening the boxes, carefully unwrapping the tissue and news paper to reveal what lay beneath. Inevitably a feeling of delight came to me as I remembered the ornament from years past.

I loved the store bought ones of course, they provide beauty that can’t be hand made, but they were not my favorite.

When I unwrapped the ones that were made by my older siblings, there are 9 of them, I was excited over those to. I remember two of my sisters ornaments they had made when they were little. They were the same paper wreath with their own photo in the middle showing off their smiles and their pretty white and pink dresses.

Years past and ornaments were saved that were made by my nieces and nephews. All adorable in their own right of course! And of course I made some too.

But my favorite ornaments were the ones that we made as a family. Not only did I have making them, but there were also happy memories. We laughed at jokes, told what was going on with us, and of course listened to, Christmas music. Nat King Cole was everyone’s favorite. It still is my favorite Christmas album.

These were the ornaments I loved most.

Making Christmas Decorations With Felt

Of course the tradition of making ornaments together had to be passed on to my children! It took many years before my eldest was old enough, but time passes whether we like it or not and now I have, as I write this, 6 children ages 2-15 and one tiny muffin baking in the oven, (meaning I am pregnant with my 7th),

This year we are going to make ornaments out of felt. I am making tutorials for you while I create examples that I will show to my children.

This year I am getting ready:

  • Felt stocking ornament, which, as you already know, is todays tutorial
  • Felt sweater
  • Felt shooting star that can also be a great stocking stuffer
  • Felt gingerbread man
  • Felt angel

Not everyone will make one of every option but they can pick one or two of them to make and hang on our tree this year.

I love making Christmas decorations with felt! Felt is this magical fabric because it is easy to work with, forgiving, and incredibly versatile! There is also a huge amount of flexibility with the different age and skill level that you may have in your family. I will be sharing some tips for how this works in my family.

Tips For Young Kids Sewing With Felt

Here are 3 quick tips for adding young kids to the sewing table. This is for approximately ages 5-8.

  1. Safety pin the two pieces they are sewing together so that the felt holds still. I use safety pin instead of regular pins so that less finger poking will happen.
  2. The simpler shape they are sewing the better. With my templates I give you for free are all good for little ones except the sweater.
  3. Larger is better. When children learn to write they write in big letters. As they get older the smaller those letters are. Same with sewing. You can enlarge my templates if you think it is needed for your beginner sewers.

Materials Needed For The Christmas Felt Stocking Ornament Tutorial

For this tutorial you will need:

  • Felt-Christmas colors. White, blue, red, and green.
  • Needle. The needle needs to be a pointy tip and a large “eye” meaning hole so that it is easier to thread. One for each sewer.
  • Embroidery floss of Christmas colors such as white, blue, red, and green. Grey can also be useful.
  • My free template found here or you can draw your own.
  • Random little objects that can decorate the stocking. Things like, tiny bells, tiny poinsettias, tiny candy canes, tiny snowflakes, etc. They can be stickers or made of paper, wood, plastic, or metal.
  • Glue gun and glue stitches.
  • Fabric and paper scissors. Don’t cut the paper patterns with fabric scissors! It will dull them quickly! Learn from my sad experience!
  • Pins. (optional)
  • Safety pins for Children roughly 8 and younger.
  • For the loop to hang on the tree with, you can use felt, ribbon, yarn, or lace. I used felt just because I already hand it out and I would have needed to go searching for another option.

Now on to the Christmas stocking tutorial!

Kid Friendly Felt Christmas Stocking Tutorial

Step 1– Start by downloading my Free printable felt Christmas Ornament patterns. Print it out and cut out the stocking one.

Step 2– Fold the felt in half and cut out the pattern with both sides being cut at one time. Note if your children want to cut the stocking pattern themselves then they need to cut one at a time or it will bring unnecessary frustrating to them. Learned that from experience too!

Step 3 – For the younger and or inexperience kids, pin the two pieces together with safty pins, or you can use regular pins for older kids. (Older may may not need this step.) Since I am old and experienced I did not pin my pieces together.

Step 4 – Sew around the stocking using the blanket stitch, leaving the top alone. Or you could use a whip stitch, or just a basic in and out stitch. If one of your kids is using the later, I find it helpful to draw a line for them to very roughly follow using a black sharpie.

Step 5 – Now bring out the decorations you collected and have fun with figuring out what to do! Some kids like to put everything they can on their stocking while others or more stylistic. This is where the glue gun comes in. Of course be careful who uses this tool!

At the top I glued a white strip of felt, but of course have fun with experimenting if you want to!

Glue on the handle and you are all set!
