Easy Knitted Christmas Ornaments For Busy Homeschoolers
Homeschooling keeps our lives super busy! When I was homeschooling it was so easy to run out of time to have my children make handmade Christmas gifts!
For some reason I thought I needed to include Christmas projects outside of school time which did not help with my already busy days. My mind shut down, and that was the end of that.
Until I fit handmade Christmas gift making during school time. Killing two birds with one stone was absolutely the way to go! For Charlotte Mason homeschoolers handicraft lesson times is the perfect time to make knitted Christmas tree ornaments. For Waldorf homeschoolers handwork lessons are the perfect time for you.
Keep It Simple
Another thing that helped a great deal was to not make the gifts complicated.
Knitting is so much fun. Knitted mini sweater ornaments are darling. Full sized hats can be easy to make and are great, useful gifts, but they also take a good amount of time. If you are reading this and Christmas is just a week away or only a few days away, you need a much quicker solution!
Your kids can still have the fun of knitting without a long time spent on it! These knitted or knitted inspired ornaments are so cute and quick to make.
I organized these 4 handmade Christmas gift DIY starting with the quickest to the longest time to make so you can decide which option(s) are best for your children and for you too!
# 1 Easy Knitted Christmas Ornaments: Ball of Yarn and Knitting Needles
This is the quickest mini knitted Christmas ornaments where no knitting is actually needed! This one will take you about 5 minutes from start to finish.
Materials Needed
- Two small wooden beads.
- Two tooth picks.
- Skinny yarn. Left over yarn is perfect for this project.
- Glue gun.
- Ornament hook
Step 1
Heat up your glue gun. When the glue gun is ready, glue the tooth pick into the hole of the wood bead. Make two.
Step 2
Make a ball of yarn. Roll it up tightly. When your ball is the size you want, cut and tuck the end. Put a dab of glue where you tucked the end for extra support.
Step 3
Stick your needles into the ball of yarn so that is crisscrosses.
Stick the ornament hook in the top middle.
All done!
# 2 Easy Knitted Christmas Ornaments: Basket Of Yarn With Tiny Knitting Needles
This easy knitted themed Christmas ornament takes around 10 minutes and also doesn’t require any knitting.
Materials Needed
- Two small wood beads
- Two tooth picks
- Two or more colors of skinny yarn
- Tiny basket
- Glue gun
- Ornament hook
Step 1
Heat up your glue gun. Glue one tip of the tooth pick into the hole of the bead. Make two of them.
Step 2
Roll several tiny balls of yarn. Make as many as you need to fill up the basket.
Fill up the basket with the yarn, then take them out again and glue each yarn ball back where you had them before.
Step 3
Stick the mini knitting needles in the top ball in an X shape.
Add the ornament hook to the top of the basket.
All done!
# 3 Easy Knitted Christmas Ornaments: Partly Knitted Scarf Ornament
A quick way to make easy knitted Christmas ornaments is to not finish the project! An unfinished knitted scarf is super cute and saves on time.
For this one it will take you about 1/2 to 1 hour to make depending on how much experience the knitter has and how long you want the scarf to be. If you have less time make the knitted scarf smaller.
Materials Needed
- Two small wooden beads
- Two tooth picks
- glue gun
- skinny yarn
- Ornament hook
Step 1
Heat up your glue gun. Glue a tooth pick inside the hole of the bead. Repeat for second mini knitting needle.
Step 2
Cast on 10-15 stitches. Start knitting! It’s the same process as knitting with normal sized knitting needles.
Here is the rhyme I taught my children how to knit with, and how I was taught to knit when I was a child.
In through the front door
Run around the back
Peeping through the window
And off pops Jack
Step 3
When your mini knitted scarf is the desired length, unwind a bunch of yarn from the ball you have been knitting with, cut, and rewind it to create the tiny ball.
If you made the ball to short, simply unwind it and tie a square knot to add more yarn, or unwind your tiny ball and cut some yarn off. Does not need to be perfect!
Wind the ball up as much as you can, stick the knitting needles into the ball. Glue the last bit of yarn attached to the ball to keep it from unraveling.
Add the ornament hook to the top.
All Done!
# 4 Easy Knitted Christmas Ornaments: Stockinette Stitched Mini Christmas Scarf Ornament
This one is another version of the one above but the knitting pattern is a stockinette instead of plain knit. I also kept half the stitches on either side of the needles to display it. I think I like this way the best. What do you think?
Materials Needed
- Two small wooden beads
- Two tooth picks
- skinny yarn
- Glue gun
- Ornament hook
Step 1
Heat up your glue gun. Glue a tooth pick inside the hole of the bead. Repeat for second mini knitting needle.
Step 2
Cast on 10 stitches. Knit the first row. Pearl the second row.
Keep alternating pearl and knit until you reached the desired length.
This is what is called the stockinette stitch. This stitch curls your work adding a darling touch the the over all look of this knitted ornament.
For your last row, stop in the middle leaving 5 stitches on one needle and 5 stitches on the other.
Glue the last bit of yarn that is attached to the ball to keep it from unwinding.
Add the ornament hook to the top.
All Done!
