Fun Things To Do On Valentine’s Day: Easy Heart Pouches
You love making Valentines together as a family but what do you do with them until Valentine’s day?
A house full of kids and delicate paper? Valentines cards are a recipe for disaster!
At least it is in my house which is why I came up with these Valentine day pouches!
I was tired of seeing my children’s beautiful Valentines ruined before Valentine’s day so something had to be done to correct this atrocity!
Okay so maybe it wasn’t an atrocity but it was still a problem!
You don’t need a sewing machine for this project, you can hand sew it. This project doesn’t take a whole lot of concentration so feel free to listen to stories or watch a movie. It can double as a great handicraft lesson for you Charlotte Mason homeschoolers! A win win for sure!
Materials Needed For Today’s Tutorial
- Two kinds of fabric per heart
- Thread
- Needle
- Safety pins or sewing pins
- News paper or other large paper
- Pencil
- Fabric Scissors
- Yarn or twine
- Glue gun (optional)
DIY: Easy Heart Pouches
Step 1
Decide on the size to make the heart. I think mine is bigger than it needed to be at around 18″ wide and just under 2′ long. The smaller the quicker it is to sew.
Cut the size out of paper, trace onto fabric and cut out two pieces, one in both fabrics.
Repeat process for making the initial. You don’t need to sew on a letter but I have 6 children so this helps me remember who’s heart pouch is who’s.
Step 2
How wide will your Valentines be? Make the opening wide enough to fit the Valentines. Don’t know? That’s okay, give it your best guess!
Helpful Tip: Put a pin on each side to mark where to start and end.
Put the fabrics wrong side back to back.
Roll over twice the fabric and pin with either safety pins or regular sewing pins. Sew together using the whip stitch. Photo tutorial below.
Step 3
Sew all the way around until you have reached the other opening.
Turn your pouch inside out.
Step 4
Don’t sew up the top! It is so frustrating to have finished sewing your project to find that the pouch you were making has no opening! I have been hand sewing for years and yet I still suffer from the frustrations of doing this sometimes!
To hem the top, fold the fabric twice as you did before.
Sew the running stitch on each side of the opening of the heart pouch.
To sew the running stitch, stitch your needle in and out 3 or more times at a time. Pull through. Repeat.
Be sure to sew both sides of the heart.
Step 5
Use the running stitch to sew on the initial.
Cut two handle pieces to desired length. You can either glue or sew the handles on. I was running out of sunlight to take pictures for this tutorial so I opted to use my glue gun.
Well Done!
