The Fun We Are Having Today
I just love this time of year! The baking, the decorating, handmade Christmas presents, stories, music, all the things that bring warmth into our homes.
Sadly one of these traditions is often neglected, the handmade Christmas gifts, especially the ones that our children can make for siblings, parents, grandparents etc.
Today is the last of the series of hand sewing stitches DIY so that your kids can make any or all of the 6 felt Christmas tree ornament patterns I am gifting to you. Pick one stitch of the three for each child that will fit their needs the best.
Handmade Christmas Presents From Kids DIY 1 of 3
Pick a hand stitch described below based on the age of your child, and then pick which one of my 6 Christmas ornament pattern you child(ren) would like to make.
This post features the very basic up and down stitch with tips to help your child have an easier time. This is the most basic of all the stitches for the Christmas present making and can work for any age 5 and up.

In this DIY I teach the whip stitch which is the next step up in your basic hand sewing stitches. This is just a little bit trickier but still simple. I recommend this stitch for ages 8 plus.

Today we are learning the third and last hand sewing stitch that your kids can make, the blanket stitch. My suggested age for the blanket stitch is 11 and up.
This is a step up from the whip stitch and is my personal favorite because it looks just so darn cute!
You can use the whip stitch for any or all of my free Christmas ornament patterns found here.
Shopping List For Handmade Christmas Presents From Kids DIY
Next up is the shopping list. Take this shopping list to your local craft store for an easy, stress free shopping trip, or at least as stress free as it can be with a bunch of children with you!
- Large holed needles with a pointy tip enough for everyone to have one needle. Embroidery needles work well.
- Stuffing. This can be wool synthetic stuffing or left over fabric. If you stuffed this white angel with anything that isn’t white in color, it will show through the white felt.
- White felt.
- Fabric and paper scissors.
- Paper to print out the free ornament pattern.
- Hot glue gun.
- Things to decorate. Such as poinsettias, snowflakes, bells, beads etc.
- Ribbon, yarn, or thin lace for the loop.
- Embroidery floss Christmas colors such as white, red, green, blue, gold or silver.
- My free patterns for these 6 patterns which you can download right here.
Pick A Hand Stitch, Pick A Christmas Ornament Pattern
So pick a stitch, the up and down stitch, the whip stitch, or the blanket stitch found below.
Next pick a Christmas felt ornament pattern, and have fun with your kids!
For this DIY I picked the angel pattern to show you the blanket stitch. Again, you can use the up and down stitch, or the whip stitch to sew your angel. You can also use another of the 6 Christmas tree ornaments from my free pattern to sew using the blanket stitch.
This DIY is for ages approximately 11 and up.

Step 1
Cut out the paper, pin it to the felt. Cut out two pieces for all the felt ornaments except the sweater, this just needs one. For more details on how to sew the sweater click here.
Step 2
Put the knot in between the two pieces of felt.
Now loop around to the back, put your needle through and pull back to the front. This is the first stitch.
Next move a little way to the left and poke your needle from the front. Grab your embroidery floss, wrap around your needle from right to left as if your poor needle is cold and needs a shawl.
Pull all the way through. Begin again.
Push the needle from the front to poke out the back again, wrap your poor cold needle around from right to left, and pull through.
Step 3
Stuff with felt or whatever you chose to stuff with as you go. You will likely need to re thread and knot a couple of times until the end. Be sure to finish the stuffing before you sew up the end!
Note: If you stuffed this white angel with anything that isn’t white in color, it will show through the white felt.
Step 4
Glue on whatever extra things you want. Use my photo for inspiration or to copy. Then glue on the loop. I put a white poinsettia so it looked like the angel was holding it.
