Kid Friendly Christmas Tree Ornament Tutorial
Tutu Ornaments For Kids 8 and Up
Today I teach you a kid friendly Christmas Tree Ornament tutorial! This tutorial is for a beautiful snow flake tutu inspired by the Nutcracker ballet. This craft is great for kids ages 8 and up. This can be done as a family with younger ones asleep, or for a homeschooling handicraft project.
Not only is this quick and easy but this Christmas craft has endless possibilities! Glue on some beads, ribbon, lace, fake flowers, and more to make the tutu what you want! You can make, Sugar Plum Fairy’s tutu, Marzipan’s tutu, Candy Cane’s tutu, and more! This is a great project to listen to Christmas music, or just chatting while enjoying each other’s company.
(If you want to listen to the story and music of the Nutcracker Ballet click here to purchase it. My children have loved this for years!)
At the end of todays post is a sweet story about a family who makes tutu ornaments together. The story brings to life the meaningful connections we have while celebrating Christmas traditions together.
Enjoy!
The Power Of Family Christmas Traditions
Every year, as a child, we pulled out the Christmas ornaments. Many of them were store bought but many of them were hand made. For many year kid friendly Christmas tree ornaments were the norm. Two were a wreath made of paper with a picture of some of my sisters in it when they were around 10 years old. A mystery little hand print was another. There were simple wool angels that I had made at my old Waldorf school. We had several beaded bells that were not easy to make but were beautiful.
My favorites were the ornaments many of us made as a group. We would reminisce, laugh, share one another’s frustrations with what ever particular craft we were making that year. We would listen to Nat King Cole’s Christmas album, which happens to be the best album in the world! See for yourself here.
Other ornaments that we made together were angels. My mother gathered ribbons, white lace, white and silver fabric and many other thing to create fancy angels.
These handmade Christmas tree ornaments were stories if our family that I loved dearly.
Will Turn Into Treasured Family Stories
Now that I am grown up and married with 6 children, we have hand made ornaments that told our family’s story until we had a fire. All our ornaments and many things besides, were turned into ashes. This of course was sad but we are very grateful no one was harmed.
We are now making new ornaments and new stories.
I love to come up with new family craft ideas and I am excited to share my newest kid friendly Christmas ornament tutorial with you!
Remember you can change this tutorial to make the Sugar Plum Fairy’s tutu, or any other you that comes to mind.
Next year when you bring your Nutcracker Ballet tutu ornaments out of it’s box, your family will have precious time recalling the mishaps and fun of making these together.
Are you ready to get started? Great, let’s go!
Nutcracker Ballet Tutu Ornament For Kids Tutorial
Materials Needed
To complete this Snow Queen tutu Christmas tree ornament craft, you will need:
- White tulle 12″ by 1 1/2″
- Needle
- Pins
- Thread or embroidery floss (white)
- Thin white lace
- White plastic snowflakes I found at Hobby Lobby
- Fabric scissors
- Glue gun
You can use whatever odds and ends you have to decorate with if you want too, making this tutorial as a guide. This is such an opened ended craft project, the options really are limitless!
Kid Friendly Christmas Tree Ornament Tutorial: Step 1
Cut our your tulle 12″ long by 1 1/2″ wide. You can have as many layers as you want, of course the more layers there are the more puffy it will be. The tutu I am making today has 11 layers. Don’t unravel your tulle after purchasing. If you want lots of layers simply fold in half, pin, and then cut.
Be sure the tulle layers are cut evenly before moving on to the next step.
Kid Friendly Christmas Tree Ornament Tutorial: Step 2
Thread your needle and knot your thread or embroidery floss. Begin on the right side close to the edge but not to close that you risk unraveling.
Start sewing up and down with your needle in a gathering stitch or in embroidery terms, a running stitch. (If you would like to see my handicraft/handwork homeschooling curriculum lesson on running stitches click here.)
Pull tight. It will start looking like a tutu now!
Kid Friendly Christmas Tree Ornament Tutorial: Step 3
Connect the two ends together with 2-3 stitches, then sew all the way down to finish making the tutu one complete circle.
Kid Friendly Christmas Tree Ornament Tutorial: Step 4
I sewed on the lace with straight stitches where there are holes. If your ribbon doesn’t have any holes then just sew close to the edge.
Alternatively you can glue the lace on.
Kid Friendly Christmas Tree Ornament Tutorial: Step 5
Fold the extra wire on the back of the snow flake to get it out of the way for 2 snow flakes.
Glue on the snow flakes.
Kid Friendly Christmas Tree Ornament Tutorial: Step 6
Fold the tutu in half with your seam in the back middle.
On either side glue ribbon (where the hip would be if you had a tiny ballerina wearing your tutu.) Tie a knot at the top.
That’s it! All that’s left is to hang your kid friendly Christmas ornament on your tree!
I would love to see your family’s tutus! You can send them to me via email at tutusandfairytales@gmail.com. It truly would bring me such joy.
Read on for the story! I promise you and your children will love it!
