Are you needing help with teaching sewing project for your 4 -7 to sew? Don’t know where to begin? How to make time for sewing? What to sew or even how to sew yourself? This post solves all these problems for you! As my children say “easy peasy lemon squeezy”!
Sewing Project for 4 -7 Tips And Tricks
Overwhelm is also a huge problem. When I was homeschooling that was one of my biggest struggles. Because overwhelm isn’t just overwhelm that hangs out in the back of your mind somewhere, it blocks your progress, it keeps you from really narrowing the problems that you are having so you can fix them or make them better.
Don’t worry dear mama, I am here to give you some tips to lessen your overwhelm allowing your family the fun of adding hand sewing handicrafts to your school time!
I share 6 tips to help you add hand sewing lessons with your cuties and laugh in the face of overwhelm for no longer will it succeed in thwarting you!
Tip 1-Sew in the afternoon
During nap time if you have babies and toddlers is a great time to handicraft. The morning is the best time for the academic stuff while the brain is at it’s best.
The afternoon is great for the children to explore things like sewing, weaving, knitting, gardening, building, experimenting, etc.
Tip 2-Make it short and sweet.
I would limit the time to 15 minutes MAX! Unless of course your children want to keep sewing. Short and sweet is just the thing for young sewers. Recently my kindergartener was done after 5 minutes working on his first doll which was just fine. Other sewing times he goes for the full 15 minutes.
You will need to do the threading and knotting for them for a while unless you have an older child that can be useful. This is another good reason to keep the sewing lessons short and sweet so there is less for you to do each sewing lesson.
If you don’t know how don’t freak out mama! I have got you covered! Learn to thread and knot here.
Just A Few More Tips To Go!
Tip 3-Have them sew where you are.
By this I mean if you need to get dishes done, or making bread, folding laundry, whatever you need to get done for your sanities sake, you can still get it done, with stops to help your sewers.
So the kitchen table is a great place for them to sit while you wash dishes or on the couch while you fold laundry. (The couch is the biggest surface for me to fold and for 6 children I need a big surface because I don’t fold as often as I should so the pile is a mile high, at least it seems to be! I am not the only one right?)
Tip 4- If your heart is desiring more read a loud time, then this can be a great time to do it! You will have interruptions as mentioned already, but you can get right back to reading once the problem is fixed.
For many children having their hands busy while being read to helps with their listening ability as long as what they are doing isn’t complicated. Todays tutorial is not complicated and therefore perfect for sewing during read a louds!
Tip 5- Sometimes you need to skip it!
Some days won’t work. Simple as that mamas.
When, not if, this day happens to you, skip the sewing with a free conscious!
Tip 6- Keep the sewing projects simple
Nothing fancy until the simple things are easy and not a challenge anymore. Of course your children may want to be challenged sooner than this, so of course, follow your child’s needs over a blog post!

Beginner Sewing Project Tutorial For Homeschooling Families
Prep Time
For little sewers, you or an older sibling will need to help with threading, knotting and other prep work that will differ depending on the project.
The prep work for this project has 3 easy steps:
- Thread and knot the needle. I have a tutorial here.
- Fold over the a flap for the top of the purse. Safety pin the sides.
- Draw a pencil line around the parts to be sewn, front and back.
Step 1
You sew the first 2-3 stitches while they watch. It is just going up and down. Below is an easy to follow photo tutorial.
Step 2
Then, let them go! Let them know to follow the line as best they can. My young fellow misses the line a lot but he likes to have the line there. It helps him to know where to sew next and it also helps his stitching to go smoother.
Step 3
Sew on the button, cut a button hole for the button to snuggle with. Because felt doesn’t unravel you don’t need to do anything to the button hole except to cut it.
Next, finger knit some yarn, or just use the yarn as is, and glue it on. When your children are older they can sew it on by themselves, but to help your job be easier I suggest just gluing it on.
All done!
